BALANCE

WHITE WOLF VS BLACK WOLF

At Uruz, balance is central to our philosophy. We use Norse, Eastern Yin-Yang, and Cherokee traditions to help convey the concept of balance across our 3 pillars to our clients. Our philosophy emphasizes nurturing and feeding the white wolf inside you which symbolises positivity and healing, while equally acknowledging the black wolf inside you which acts as a symbol of aggression and destructiveness.

Within our programming, we strive to maintain a balance between nurturing your black and white wolf energies across our three core pillars. Focusing too much on one can lead to negative consequences. Take, for example, my rugby career where I concentrated heavily on the body aspect of our philosophy. I realised that I fed my black wolf excessively through intense physical field sessions, going hard at weight training, and numerous high-impact collisions, neglecting to nurture my white wolf equally through things such as mobility, biomechanics training, low impact CV and rest. At the time, I believed this approach was necessary and giving my all to each and every session would give me the best results, but looking back, I see that I failed to achieve balance in my training particularly early on in my career. This imbalance eventually manifested as pain, injuries, and a decline in performance over the years. On the other hand however, if I was to have focused too much on nurturing my white wolf, limited progress and adaption would be made toward achieving my goals. Therefore the best way of achieving longevity, sustainable progress and managing your body, mind and lifestyle is by equally balancing out the black and white wolf energy within you.

HOW THIS CONCEPT WAS BORN

The traditional Eastern Yin-Yang philosophy embodies the idea that opposing forces are interconnected and interdependent, creating balance and harmony in the natural world. In Norse mythology, Skoll and Hati, depicted as half wolf and half god, symbolize the destructive and rejuvenating aspects of a person, akin to the Cherokee tale of two wolves, whereby it’s said that within every person are two wolves: a black wolf of anger and negativity and a white wolf of love and positivity. The wolf that prevails is the one you choose to feed. Just as in Yin-Yang philosophy, feeding the black wolf (destruction) aligns with Yin’s darker aspects, while feeding the white wolf (healing) reflects Yang’s positive healing energy. Achieving balance involves recognizing and managing both sides, as overfeeding one wolf can lead to imbalance. For us at Uruz this analogy perfectly aligns with our philosophy.
